Yes, You Can Walk! (Results Not Typical Or Guaranteed.)

We’ve all seen the commercials, where some product comes along and claims that it grows hair, makes you thin and gives your kitchen sink a spotless shine.

Then, when you’re ready to pick up the phone and order it, you see and hear the announcer state calmly that the results are not guaranteed. Typical side effects can, and often do, include hair loss, weight gain, and permanent stains on your sink.

Aren’t you thankful that life isn’t really like that? Or is it?

When you learn to walk, your parents were supportive as a person can get. “Come on, you can do it. Just take one step. It’s great!”

But suppose they were like the television announcers?” C’mon, kid, most babies can do this. Try to take a step. Aww, you fell. Forget it. You’re just not meant to walk. Sorry kid.”

Does that Ever happen? I doubt it. Yet these same parents who were so supportive when you were 18 months old have a different point of view when you get to be 18 years old. Am I right?

All of a sudden, these awesome supportive people trash all of your efforts to make something of yourself. Instead of “Wow, that’s great. Go for it,” you hear…

“That’s too expensive.”

“You’re not smart enough.”

“You can make money doing that.”

And my favorite-

“Your father has a job all lined up you where he works at the Toxic Waste Dump.”
What happened to these awesome parents in the 16 1/2 years when you learned to walk to when you now try to assert your independence?

The reasons are as varied as there are parents. A big one is that they don’t want you to get hurt. Another is that they don’t know anyone who ever made money writing, selling, teaching, or what ever it is you would like to do with your life.

My advice is to stick to your career choice, but do it in a way that won’t cause your family to throw you out or not speak to you for the rest of your life.

Go to the college they want you to go to, especially if they’re picking up the tab. Pick a major you don’t hate, one that will make the folks happy. Take classes that pertain to your interests as a Minor, or even as a second Major. No education ever goes to waste, so make the most of every opportunity that comes your way.

Study on your own in your chosen field whenever you can squeeze in the time. It’ll take time away from the fun and games, but it will be worth it to your future.

When you get into the “adult world,” things will not get much better unless you are lucky. Stay away from the toxic people, even if they are your friends. They will only put a drag on your Success.

Make the best of every situation. Make new friends if the ones you have currently are toxic. Never stop learning, especially new things. They will keep your mind fresh and young.

Have fun while you’re doing all of this. This is especially important for your mental health.

Watch many sunsets.

Smell all the flowers, not just the roses.

Be silly and weird, as long as you don’t hurt anyone else or yourself.

Watch more baseball.

Go to the movies more often.

Enjoy The Journey.
